Hi.. I am Dr.Sushanthi, Final year post graduate. Glad to present my Research Porfolio and projects which I am working right now. I have a keen interest in developing novel, indigenous drug delivery systems and to proceed with various stages of trial which the same. have completed about 15 projects under the guidance of our faculty team, 8 of which has been accepted and published in reputed, indexed, dental domain journals. Have files 3 patents and working on commercialising the same. my research thrust areas are animal studies, Nano dentistry and indigenous herbs.

What is Vernonia amygdalina?

Vernonia amygdalina is a short herb that has its origin in tropical Africa.

It is also known as bitter leaf, which says its taste. Many researches revealed that its leaves juice was effective against diabetes. In Nigeria, twigs and sticks from this plant were used as a chewing stick for dental hygiene and stems were incorporated in soaps.

What made me to do research in Vernonia amygdalina?

As we all know India is the Diabetic capital of the world, I always thought of picking a herb which is effective against diabetes in my research since diabetes and oral diseases are mutually connected. This herb Vernonia amygdalina got my eye through a blog which made me to push my boundaries and started researching about this.

How does the nanoparticle come to play?

Nanotechnology is emerging as an interdisciplinary field that is undergoing rapid development and has brought about enormous changes in medicine and dentistry. Nanomaterial-based design is able to mimic some of the mechanical and structural properties of native tissue and can promote bio integration. This made to incorporate nanoparticle into herb to formulate mouthwash. I specifically chose copper nanoparticle over other nanoparticles because of its various properties like antibiotic, antimicrobial and antifungal which got my attention.

Final Version of Vernonia amygdalina mediated copper nanoparticle mouthwash?

So the final version of my dream project took off like a great start. This invention related to an antibacterial and oral hygiene composition with a unique herbal incorporation named Vernonia amygdalina which is alcohol free and it possesses improved activity against oral microorganisms. Mouthwashes are liquid preparations specifically designed to cleanse and refresh the mouth. While many early mouthwashes comprised no more than pleasantly flavoured coloured solutions, a new generation of rinses are provided with active ingredients which have efficacious action against problems associated with malodour, dental caries, and gum diseases. Mouthwash may be recommended as an antimicrobial, a topical anti- inflammatory agent, a topical analgesic, or for caries prevention.Vernonia amygdalina was made into nanoparticle to elevate its property and the characteristic that possesses nanomaterial, effectively eliminate bacterial plaque and gingivitis, have convergence, antibacterial and promotion tissue repair effect, it is a kind of safe and effective, easily the purpose of novel fluoride-free , alcohol free, chlorhexidine free health-care mouthwash with copper added to it .Improve its comprehensive serviceability, produce and be convenient to control and operation; Improve whole suitability for industrialized production level and ability.

study timeline and future scope

With the successful completion of invitro characterisation and toxicology studies, the novel idea has progressed in to animal trial. Which started using albino Winstar rats was started and our Vernonia amygdalina mediated copper nanoparticle incorporated mouthwash was tested for its efficacy of anti-microbial properties against oral microbes. in ten years I see myself commercializing the mouth wash after successful completion of human clinical trials.
