The very idea stemmed at an UNESCO conference and was voice by Mr.John McConnell, a peace activist. On this day, rallies, awareness drives and oath taking sessions are conducted around the world.

Major incidents like Santa Barbara Oil Spill in 1969, and other related events triggered to take this day even more seriously. As a part of the awareness drive, a short interactive video based programme was organised by the team of public health dentistry, which ended with a oath taking session by participants, emphasising on each persons role in protecting the earth.
